Boston's once loud and proud Rock station had been running on
fumes since abandoning the bands and listeners that made it great in the
interest of attracting a younger audience. 'BCN still rocked
after the shift to 'Alternative', but none of the 'next big bands' turned out
to have any staying power - and neither did the younger audience, which
increasingly considers radio as obsolete as the typewriter. CBS
announced this week that WBCN will stop Rocking on the FM dial on
August 13 to make room for yet another sports-talk format. Ironically, WZLX,
another CBS station in Boston that features a format aimed at
listeners that grew up loving the old WBCN format is doing very well.
Eulogies for 'BCN won't be about its recent format - they
will be about the amazing station at 104.1FM starting in 1968 that was programmed by and for people passionate about the music,
and
announcers like Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band, Mark
Parenteau, Charles Laquaidara, Sam Kopper, Norm
Weiner, Maxanne Sartori, Zircon John Brody, Carter Allen
(now
on WZLX),.. RIP (Rock In Peace),
'BCN.
