Whiter Shade of Pale royalties
battle ends well for Fisher
Matthew Fisher has won his claim that the signature organ intro to
the band's biggest song entitled him to a share of the royalties.
The House of Lords agreed - to the tune of 40% of future
royalties. The four year legal wrangle began after Fisher
claims lead singer Gary Brooker 'rebuffed or ignored' his
requests for a share of earnings from the 1967 song that sold more
than 6 million copies. Future royalties on this particular old
song will be significant. It topped a recent chart of publicly
performed songs in the UK [story].
The decision is certain to
spike phone, email and txt messaging between current and former
musicians and their barristers in the UK.
