Former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer
Artimus Pyle contends Ronnie Van Zant would be ashamed of
the way the late singer's family and the current members have used the
name Lynyrd Skynyrd. In an interview with the
Charleston Gazette, Pyle went so far as to say the
I'm-Afraid-Of-My-Wife band would be a better name for a group
that he says Van Zant's widow has too much control over.
Pyle contends the right thing to do would have been to retire
the Skynyrd name after the 1977 plane crash that took the life
of Van Zant and Steve and Cassie Gaines and form
a new band. For Pyle, the plane crash was just the start of his
troubles. A suspicious farmer shot him when he sought help the
night of the crash. After leaving the reunited band in 1991 he faced
charges that landed him in a Florida sex offender database. He
still tours and records - and says he tries to "remain true to the
music" WVgazette.com
