July 11 is the 40th anniversary of the release of the song
inspired by both Stanley Kubrick's 1968 movie 2001: A
Space Odyssey and the following year's lunar landing mission.
David Bowie is marking the milestone by giving fans access to
the original multi-track segments of Space Oddity so they can remix it.
"Multi" was a lot less multi in 1969, so not every instrument used in
the original recording had a dedicated track - but hey, you can add as
many additional instruments, vocals and sound effects as you want. Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, achieved a
milestone of his own with a similar theme this year with the release of the
feature film he directed, Moon.
