4/19/1971 The Doors release LA Woman

The Doors released their 6th album on this day in 1971.  LA Woman was the last before Jim Morrison's death that summer in Paris and was a strong indication of what a force the band would have continued to be had his life not gone off the rails.  Recording of the album began soon after Jim Morrison's trial over an alleged indecent exposure incident during a Miami concert concluded with his conviction.  Producer Paul Rothchild resigned from the project, reportedly over a clash with the band over the arrangement of Love Her Madly and the slow pace at which the group was coming up with new songs.

Engineer Bruce Botnick stepped in and co-produced the album with the band members.  To save money and allow for the extra time to flesh out the songs, Botnick and the Doors turned the band's rehearsal space into a studio, with Morrison recording some vocals in a bathroom doorway.

The album got a much better reception than Soft Parade, cracking the top 10 on the Billboard album chart and remaining on it for most of the remaining weeks of the year.  Three months after its release, Jim Morrison died in Paris.
