Good Seats For Good
Causes
Nice being able to pass along news that there is a ticket agency doing
more than lining its own pockets with profits from premium ticket sales.
Tickets-For-Charity gives event goers a shot at seats for the same
or better prices than those available from many other brokers and donates a
chunk of the proceeds to support charitable programs. Artists help by
giving Tickets-For-Charity access to the tickets.
The campaign has already generated more than $3 million for charities at
a time when they need it the most. Artists working with the agency
include the Rolling Stones, The Police and James Taylor.
Tickets-For-Charity hopes partnering with more artists will help it
raise tens of millions more for causes like Habitat For Humanity, The
Humane Society, Farm Aid, Feeding America, Outward Bound, Urban Farmers, the

Famed New York
Instrument Store Takes Final Bow
Touring musicians dropped in at Manny's whether they were
in the market for new gear or not. Changing times finally caught up
with the famed instrument store that outfitted novices and masters alike for
almost 75 years at its location around the corner from Times Square.
For decades, the store Manny Goldrich opened in 1935 on 48th Street
in Manhattan was just steps away from many of the most influential addresses
in the world of music. Music Row, as the area was known, has
lost most of the studios, record labels, agents and publishers that once
made it the epicenter of popular music. Although the founder's
grandson sold the store to the large instrument retailer Sam Ash
about 10 years ago, it continued operating as Manny's until yesterday
(5/31).
It will be converted into a Sam Ash
guitars only outlet. For now, the decades of notes and mementos left
by famous musicians are going into storage. You can see many of them
online at
mannysvirtualwall.com, a site Manny's
granddaughter, Holly Goldrich, put together to preserve the memories
of the store.

Hollywood Bowl Lands
Daltrey
Long before amphitheaters started sprouting up across the country, there was
the Hollywood Bowl. Named for the natural bowl it occupies in
the Hollywood Hills, the venue started hosting concerts in 1922. The
first of the famous shells surrounding the stage was built 5 years later,
and has been replaced several times since. A Hall Of Fame for
performers that have played the HB was not established until 2000.
Considering how many artists have played it over the decades, surprisingly
few have been inducted. George Harrison is the only Beatle,
Brian Wilson the only Beach Boy, and Roger Daltrey the
only member of The Who. Daltrey, inducted in 2003,
returns this year to perform at the ceremony for new members Josh Groban
and opera star Kiri Te Kanawa
(6/19). The Who did its
first Bowl concert in 1967 and returned to play it 33 years later.

Waters Promises Concert
If Israeli Wall Falls
Roger Waters yesterday told the Associated Press that he will do
a concert in Israel as soon as the wall the government erected as a security
barrier in the West Bank is brought down. The Pink Floyd bass
player, who performed in Berlin as the wall dividing the German city was
demolished, visited a Palestinian refugee camp yesterday. The
Waters vow brought a terse reply from an Israeli official. Borrowing
words from Another Brick In The Wall, he said, "...we don't need no

George Gets Down & Dirty
The new release out July 28 promises to deliver the kind of grinding
electrified blues rock that was the hallmark of early George Thorogood
albums. The Dirty Dozen, which includes the songs of
blues legends like Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and
Sleepy John Estes, will get released in vinyl as well as digital
formats. The decision to include an LP edition made itself,
says Thorogood. "I definitely had vinyl in mind... when we were
recording the new tracks." The LP theme carries over to CD versions,
with songs labeled as Side One and Side Two. Side two reintroduces
several Thorogood songs that have been out of print. George
and the Destroyers take to the road this summer for 30 dates, 22 of
which will be co-headlines shows with Jonny Lang.

Van Halen Rift With
Anthony Deepens
We did not expect it to be long before someone in Van Halen
stepped up to respond to reports Michael Anthony was spouting off
about being ousted from the band. Eddie Van Halen being
the one turned into a safe bet when Anthony was quoted as calling his
Chickenfoot band mate Joe Satriani a better guitar player than
Van Halen a few weeks ago.
[story]
Rolling Stone got Eddie's
response in LA before the guitarist accepted the Guitar God award
from Robert Downey Jr. at the Spike Guys Choice Awards in LA.
Van Halen told RS, "...everyone who quits the band always
claims they got fired by me" in denying anything of the kind happened.
He contends Anthony decided to leave the band when Sammy Hagar
opted out. The site says the bass player claims he found out he was
out of the band on the internet. Don't expect it to stop here.

Recording Studios
Disappearing
The choice of studio is as important to some musicians as the producer they
select for a project. For decades, studios in the league of Abbey
Road, Olympic Studios, the Hit Factory, Electric Ladyland, Muscle
Shoals, Criterion, the Capitol and Atlantic Records Studios
had more demand than they could keep up with. But some of the same
technology that made lps and the compact disc obsolete to millions of music
fans also allows musicians to be a lot less dependent on traditional
recording studios. Surviving studios are leaner Many have been unable
to keep their doors open. A collection of people with professional and
emotional ties to a studio just north of San Francisco is waging a campaign
to keep the foreclosed property from being sold or auctioned off to
developers. Mick Fleetwood found out about the plight of the
Record Plant in Sausalito when he went to visit the space where
Fleetwood Mac recorded Rumors in 1976 and found it shuttered.
He has recorded a video urging others to help the group trying to preserve
the studio his band, the Grateful Dead, Van Morrison, the Doobie
Brothers, John Fogerty, Santana, the Jefferson Starship, Joe Walsh,

The NHL has nothing to worry about - but Canadian Guess Who fans will
get the chance to see Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings
together. Prohibited from using the name Guess Who because bass
player Jim Kale locked up the legal rights to it, the duo is using
Bachman Cummings. We don't know how they arrived at that instead of
Cummings Bachman, but arm wrestling probably was not involved. The
last time they did that was during a photo shoot for the cover of their 2007

statement a band publicist released a week ago saying Brad would miss

Seems a simple, if embarrassing, case of Whitford hitting his head
while getting out of the exotic car. Hey, no worse than Keith

better than in '98 when Joey Kramer of Aerosmith had his
Ferrari ignite at a gas station causing 2d degree burns. Whitford

Peter Gabriel Confirms
WOMAD Appearance
A July 25 performance during the World of Music Arts and Dance
gathering in the UK is the only Peter Gabriel concert on the
horizon. The one time Genesis front man is busy on many fronts,
including the recent launch last fall of We7.com, an advertising
supported free music site [story]
and his ongoing work on behalf of
Witness.org, a human rights group. His set at WOMAD is
being done to raise money for that organization. Gabriel says, "I had no
plans to play in the UK but when Festival Director, Chris Smith, heard I was
looking for a suitable event, he generously offered Saturday at WOMAD".
Gabriel hope the appearance nets more than $150,000 for the cause.

Early Rolling Stones & Beatles Artifacts Available
A July 1 sale by Christies includes a guitar that is a lot less
exotic than many the famed auction house has featured. But the unadorned 1960 Harmony Stratotone
is one of the earliest Stones artifacts to come to market, and one of
the relatively few Brian Jones items in circulation. Jones
played the guitar on the band's first single, Come On Want To Be Loved,
in 1963. Popular among young musicians because it was inexpensive, the
Harmony model is thought to be the first guitar Jones owned.
Eric Clapton sold his Stratotone at an auction ten years ago.
The Jones guitar is expected to fetch between $50,000 - $80,0000.
Looking for something a bit more affordable? How about an original
copy of the management contract Brian Epstein signed with the
Beatles - for FREE. The contract, signed by band members and the
fathers of Harrison & McCartney because their sons were
under 21, is being given away by a web site run by

Georgia Theater Burns
The Georgia Theater was converted into a concert hall during
the last couple of months in 1977. Sea Level, the band
featuring Chuck Leavell of the Allman Brothers Band and
Rolling Stones, played the opening night in January '78. The 600 seat
Athens venue hosted a lot of outstanding shows before a fire claimed the
building recently. Sam Smartt, a member of the group that revived the
theater, recounts some of the more memorable events of the venue's past in a
good read at
chattanoogan.com, including the time Jimmy Buffett
saved it from a financial disaster. The theater had booked BB King
for two shows on the same night. At $8 a ticket (!), both shows would
have to sell out for the theater to avoid losing money. Shortly after
the deal was sealed, a free Jimmy Buffett show at the nearby coliseum
was announced by the University of Georgia. Smartt tried to
cancel BB's appearances but told he would lose his $2,500 deposit,
decided to keep the dates. The first show sold out, but Smartt
and his partners knew that the younger crowd they would need for the late
show would be at the Buffett show. Jimmy closed his set
at the coliseum by saying he'd like to play longer, but had found out that
BB King was at the Georgia Theater and he was going to see
him, which he did - and so did enough of the crowd at his show to sell out
the second show.

Duncan Jones May Do Film With
Father
Director Duncan
Jones, the son of David Bowie, tells the BBC that a future film
project with his father is possible. Bowie's film credits
include The Man Who Fell To Earth and Labyrinth.
His son's feature film directing debut came this year in Moon, a
sci-fi movie starring Sam Rockwell (Confessions Of A Dangerous
Mind Matchstick Men, The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy) and the
voice of Kevin Spacey as the voice of the mission computer.
[story]
Jones expects it will be a few years before he has enough experience
as a film maker to have the confidence to be comfortable directing his
father in a movie, adding, "I'd also want people to know he was in my film
because I wanted him in it, not because I need him to be." His father,
born David Jones, changed his last name to Bowie because
Davey Jones of the Monkees was established on the pop culture
radar when he began his career.

Woodstock Remembered at Rock
Hall
Even as late as 1969,
plenty of people considered Rock & Roll a passing fad. A lot of what
passes for Rock these days is only vaguely related to the music of the
Woodstock era. Still, the fact Rock has persevered through more
generations than most expected it would surprises even the ones on the
receiving end of the first "...turn that down!" and "...you call that
music?"
The Rock Hall Of Fame marks the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock
Festival with a special exhibit that opens July 3 and will continue
through the end of November. Included in the exhibit is clothing worn
by artists that gathered at Yasgur's farm August 15-17 of that summer, along
with a number of other artifacts. The Cleveland exhibit is just one of
several special events marking the 40th anniversary of the festival this

Michael Jackson
Dead
The sideshow that was Michael Jackson shifted into Elvis mode
today
(6/25) when when paramedics
were called to a Bel-Air address after the singer suffered what was believed
to be a heart attack. The LA Times reported that a 911 call
placed from the home off Sunset Boulevard Jackson was renting for $100,000 a
month brought emergency responders who found the 50 year old unresponsive.
Attempts to revive him at the scene failed. He was transported to the
UCLA Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Jackson went from child star to super star before his own
strange fixations and those who sought to take advantage of his stardom
reduced him to a pathetic figure whose fortune, reputation and credibility
had all been squandered. He was attempting to mount a comeback tour at
the time of his death. It remains to be seen what becomes of
Jackson's remaining share of control of the Beatles song catalog.
The pop star pulled off the stunning acquisition at the height of his solo
career in the early 80's. Financial problems had since forced him to
reduce his stake. Their have been reports that his will would leave
his share to Paul McCartney - though that could have changed even if
it was once the case.

U2 360° Stage
When U2 opens its world tour Tuesday
(6/30) in Barcelona, Spain, the band members will
take a stage unlike any other. A New York Times piece on the
custom designed, circular stage describes a superstructure rising more
than 150 above the performers that supports the sound, lighting and the
massive wrap-around video screen. Weighing in at over 350 tons, 180
trucks are needed to transport the structure and equipment. A member of the
design team describes it as looking like "...escaped from a giant sea
aquarium." The goal of the design was to provide the best possible
sightlines and to increase the percentage of the audience in close proximity
to the stage. Distant fans will feel close, thanks to the multi panel
video screen with a half a million pixel count. Three complete stages
have been manufactured to allow for one to be under assembly and
another in transit while one is in use.

Video Adds
Unprecedented Visuals to U2 Concert Experience
U2 has taken extraordinary measures to make its 360° Tour a
concert experience unlike any other for fans. The group commissioned
the design and construction of an enormous and technically ground breaking
stage [story].
Fans in Barcelona for the opening night of the tour tonight
(6/30) will
also get the benefit a video display that is remarkable for more than just
it's size and superb resolution. Created by Hoberman Associates in
conjunction with Innovative Designs, the display contains 888 LED
screens spanning nearly 4,000 square feet and delivering visuals through
500,000 pixels. Those factors alone make it perhaps the most ambitious
display ever built. But the 120,000 pound screen is also agile.
Constructed using stainless steel and aircraft aluminum, the screen is
capable of both expanding and changing shape. The combination of
eye-popping resolution, a transformable shape and visuals alternating
between live shots of the band on stage and video created by Catherine
Owens, director of the U2 3D movie, could make
sitting farther from the stage better than being up close. It is
certain to make this U2 tour one that fans will remember as much for what
they saw as what they heard. We've come a long way from gels on
overhead projectors - the 'technology' behind the original light show.
