EC & Winwood Close Out At Hollywood Bowl
The tour reuniting the one time Blind Faith guitarist & keyboard player came to an end last night at the Hollywood Bowl.  The 14th and final US show opened with Had To Cry Today, the opening song on the only studio album Blind Faith recorded.  After a 17 song set concluding with a take on VooDoo Chile, the Hendrix classic from Electric Ladyland, they closed with an encore showcasing one of the biggest songs of each artist - Cocaine from Clapton, and Dear Mr. Fantasy from the groundbreaking 1967 release by Winwood's band, Traffic

Chickenfoot Drummer Tears Bicep
Like hockey goalies and baseball catchers, drummers take a beating playing their position.  They get used to playing through injuries.  But it is not always possible.  During a set in Paris on Monday night (6/29), Chickenfoot drummer Chad Smith tore the small bicep in one arm.  The injury was severe enough to force the group featuring Van Halen alums Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony  together with Joe Satriani and the former Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer to cancel its show last night in Madrid.

Beatles Cover Hits The Spot For Budweiser
The licensing of songs for commercials crosses a line for a lot of fans - especially when it involves a song with decades of associations.  The fact Our Country by John Mellencamp was in a Chevy truck commercial before it was even on an album made it less objectionable than the same sponsor sucking the meaning out of Like A Rock by Bob Seger.  When Nike reportedly paid  $250,000 to use Revolution by the Beatles in a 1987 sneaker ad reaction was swift and very negative.  But the decision to license it belonged not to the surviving Beatles but to Michael Jackson, who had bought the publishing rights to most of the catalog four years earlier, and Capitol Records.  All Together Now has been around since 1969, and while there is little chance the light hearted song from Yellow Submarine has forged the deep connections other songs by the Beatles have with fans, many will cringe at the idea of it being used to shill for beer.  But if you are willing to cut some slack for the artistic merit of how it is used, the Budweiser ad shot from a Chicago Transit train with the song being covered by the indie group The Hours just might earn a pass from you.  See it here.

Another Aerosmith Set Back
Late breaking word that the Aerosmith-ZZ Top concert scheduled for tonite
(7/1) at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati is postponed comes as the result of an apparent medical  problem involving a band member.  Which band and the nature of the "artist injury" referenced in the release about postponement remain unknown, but if it involves Aerosmith it adds to the list of medical problems that have plagued the band in recent months.  Guitarist Joe Perry had to undergo leg surgery, causing cancellation of a South American festival appearance and delaying the start of work on the next album. [story].  Shortly after work had resumed, Steven Tyler contacted pneumonia. And just days before the tour was set to kick-off, Brad Whitford underwent head surgery to relieve pressure after banging his head getting out of his Ferrari. [story]

Fogerty, Alice Cooper, DMB at Montreaux
The idea of Shock Rocker in the lineup of the Montreux Jazz Festival is no more of a stretch than Jon Bon Jovi playing this year's New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival [story].  The Swiss fest has included Rockers since the early 70's. It's original home burned to the ground the night of a Frank Zappa concert at the end of 1971 - inspiring the Deep Purple song Smoke On The Water.  The 43d edition opens Friday (7/3) on the shores of Lake Geneva with more than 100 performers scheduled over its nearly two week run.  In addition to Fogerty, Cooper and Matthews, the lineup includes Jeff Beck, BB King, Steely Dan, Steve Winwood and The Derek Trucks Band.  Chickenfoot was scheduled to appear until drummer Chad Smith was injured during the band's show in Paris (story below).

Aerosmith Drops Another

Using the same non-specific "artist injury" reference
[story], Aerosmith cancelled two more dates on its tour with ZZ Top by announcing that tonight's show (7/3) at Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, PA and the Sunday (7/5) Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Virginia Beach are both off.  A representative of Aerofoceone.com, which also generates the News feed for Aerosmith.com, indicates the band has not provided any additional details about who is ailing or about the nature of the injury.  RI has found no reference to anything related to the postponements  from Joe Perry on his very active Twitter account.

Lennon Guitar Tops $337k at Christies
A 1958 Hofner Senator guitar belonging to John Lennon beat its estimated value by more than $100,000 Wednesday by bringing in a top bid of  $337,226.  The beautiful instrument, authenticated with a photo showing John playing it at a club in Hamburg, Germany in 1960 and a letter George Harrison wrote in 1982 identifying it as one of the first guitars Lennon owned, was a showcase piece in another auction of pop culture treasures conducted in London by the famed auction house.  Other items sold on the day included dozens of other pieces of Beatle memorabilia,a shirt belonging to Jimi Hendrix Experience bass player Noel Redding ($1,800), autographed album artwork from David Bowie ($8,125), The Doors ($7,188). Another item that handily exceeded the expected high bid was the original artwork for the 1984 Metallica album Ride The Lightning. It brought $15,403, beating the estimated value by more than $6,000

Allen Klein dies in NYC
The man with the distinction of having managed both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones passed away today
(7/4) in New York City.  Allen Klein  earned a reputation as a shrewd business man in a multi-faceted career in the music industry.  His tenacity also contributed to frayed relationships with both groups.  Klein retained the rights to many Stones songs even after the group had severed their management ties to him.  His handling of affairs for the  Beatles after John Lennon convinced his band mates to hire Klein following the death of Brian Epstein also produced friction, despite his instrumental role in securing one of the most lucrative deals ever for the band with the parent label of Apple Records,, EMI.  Flare-ups between Klein and Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr continued in the years after both the group and the management deal had ended.  Klein was 77 at the time of his death, which was attributed to Alzheimer's Disease.

Foo Fighters Play White House Lawn
The move to broaden the range of entertainment at White House events has already produced several events that would not have taken place if John McCain had taken up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.  Another came last night when President Obama hosted a 4th of July bar-b-que and concert featuring the Foo Fighters.  Dave Grohl, who grew up just across the Potomac in Alexandria, Virginia, was honored to have the chance to perform for members of the armed forces, including a number of wounded veterans receiving treatment at nearby Walter Reed Medical Center.  The President said his goal was to make the event as much like backyard parties that take place throughout the country on Independence say as possible.
Jimmy Fallon
served as the MC of the party.  Grohl and the band roared through about a hlf dozen songs, concluding as the opening shells from the fireworks display on the Mall lit up the night sky.

Yes - Anderson Relations Fragile
The decision to replace an ailing Jon Anderson so Yes could start its tour several months ago
[story] may never have been temporary in the mind of at least one member.  Steve Howe, in an interview with the Orange County Register, voiced resentment about Anderson having nixed tour plans before last fall.  While Howe did not suggest the seriousness of Anderson's condition last fall was overstated, he did the telling the paper the singer had used his health as an excuse for not being able to tour with Yes while at the same time continuing to work on other projects, saying, "...if he was fit enough to tour on his own, I thought maybe he was fit enough to tour with us.  But he still turned us down".

Jacko And Elvis
It's no surprise that the death of Michael Jackson has taken on a life of its own. The similarities in life and death between the King Of Pop and The King make it clear that the career of Michael Jackson will go on without him.  The media feeding frenzy and international fixation with MJ will both taper in the wake of his memorial service and funeral, but there is no reason to think the meetings and deals to cash in on the 'next phase' of Jackson's career have been on hold out of respect.  From odds makers taking bets on whether the toxicology report indicates more or fewer drugs in his system than Presley's did to people planning to make Neverland the next Graceland, Michael is and will continue to be big business.  That both artists became bizarre enough to turn into caricatures of their former selves does little to diminish their appeal to fans and and potential to entrepreneurs.  The sad thing is that in many ways, both were destroyed by their own fame.  Reaching a level of notoriety that makes it impossible to live a 'normal' life is tough even for well grounded people.  Most who even approach the level of fame that Presley and Jackson 'enjoyed' live significant portions of their their lives in a bubble.  No matter how spacious and lavish the bubble, living in one takes a toll. The "price of fame",  stressful to a well balanced person, can cause the more vulnerable ones to completely unravel.
I never cared for Jackson's music, and the only Elvis era I liked ended way  before he put on a sequined jumpsuit.  But their deaths are just as tragic as those of the many musicians I admired whose death certificates could have included "excess notoriety" or "victim of star making machinery"* along with their "official" cause of death.  It's a list that includes Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Jerry Garcia, Syd Barrett, Bon Scott,  John Bonham, Keith Moon, Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain and dozens of others.

U2 Fans Give Band Earful
The Claw
, the technologically advanced stage U2 is performing on, has contributed a lot to the band's 360° Tour buzz.
[story]  But rumors that only portions of the massive stage and video display [story] that made its debut in Barcelona (6/30) would be used at the Dublin concerts has set off protests from some holding tickets for the three concerts at Croke Park (7/25,25&27).  The fact the smaller configuration frees up space so more can attend and assurances that the hometown fans will not experience less than what the band is delivering elsewhere has done little to quiet criticism from fans who are lobbying for the band to stage the Dublin concerts on the full stage.  The possibility of doing that is expected to vanish as quickly as the additional tickets, which went on sale today (7/6).  160,000 tickets for the 3 concerts were sold in less than 1 hour when they first went on sale.

No Return Of Song Rights No Big Deal To McCartney
Speculation in a British tabloid
that the Michael Jackson will would return the remaining rights to Beatles songs he owns to Paul McCartney has been debunked - and the former Beatle says he never believed it.  Some of the same sites that bought into the original rumor are apparently now claiming that McCartney was "devastated" to find out that he was omitted from the will.  A post from Paul on his web site says those reports are as bogus as the original story.  The brief statement closes with, "At times like this, the press do tend to make things up, so occasionally, I feel the need to put the record straight".
Jackson bought the rights to much of the Beatles song catalog in 1984 for a reported 46 million dollars.  He relinquished control of a significant portion of it to offset some of his mounting debt in recent years.

Create Your Own Space Oddity
July 11 is the 40th anniversary of the release of the song inspired by both Stanley Kubrick's 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey and the following year's lunar landing mission.  David Bowie is marking the milestone by giving fans access to the original multi-track segments of Space Oddity so they can remix it.  "Multi" was a lot less multi in 1969, so not every instrument used in the original recording had a dedicated track - but hey, you can add as many additional instruments, vocals and sound effects as you want.  Bowie's son, Duncan Jones, achieved a milestone with a similar theme this year with the release of the feature film Moon.

Artimus Pyle Brands Skynyrd Shameful
Former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle contends Ronnie Van Zant would be ashamed of the way the late singer's family and the current members have used the name Lynyrd Skynyrd.  In an interview with the Charleston Gazette, Pyle went so far as to say the I'm-Afraid-Of-My-Wife band would be a better name for a group that he says Van Zant's widow has too much control over.  Pyle contends the right thing to do would have been to retire the Skynyrd name after the 1977 plane crash that took the life of Van Zant and Steve and Cassie Gaines and form a new band.  For Pyle, the plane crash was just the start of his troubles.  A suspicious farmer shot him when he sought help the night of the crash. After leaving the reunited band in 1991 he faced charges that landed him in a Florida sex offender database.  He still tours and records - and says he tries to "remain true to the music"

Aeromsith postponements Reach Florida

Concerts Saturday

ZZ Top Gets RAW Deal & Gibbons Guitar Cloned

Money she sent the band when she sold the car arrived the same day Gibbons bought the guitar.  Figuring the car brought his lady friend good luck, Billy decided to give the guitar the same name.

The bad news is that bass player Tom Hamilton will have to miss some tour dates after undergoing what is described by the band as a non-invasive surgery.  David Hull, a veteran of the Joe Perry Project will fill-in for Hamilton on dates he misses.  Drummer Joey Kramer as the only member of the band to have avoided illness, injury or surgery since Joe Perry went under the knife for a leg problem a few months ago.

Dream Continues For Springsteen
The European leg of the Working On A Dream tour comes to a close in Spain on August 2.  After a couple of weeks off, Bruce and the E Street Band open a newly expanded number of US dates with a concert in Hartford, Connecticut on the 19th.  Other additions to the schedule include several cities the tour did not hit before heading overseas, and return engagements in a number of places it did.  The latter category includes two more shows at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The scene of dozens of legendary Springsteen shows and one of Bruce's favorite venues and cities to play, the Spectrum joins Giants Stadium as another close to home venue slated for demolition later in the year.

WBCN Siging Off In Boston
Boston's once loud and proud Rock station had been running on fumes since abandoning the bands and listeners that made it great in the interest of attracting a younger audience.  'BCN still rocked after the shift to 'Alternative', but none of the 'next big bands' turned out to have any staying power - and neither did the younger audience, which increasingly considers radio as obsolete as the typewriter. CBS announced this week that WBCN will stop Rocking on the FM dial on August 13 to make room for yeat another sports-talk format.  It will continue streaming online at wbcn.com.   Ironically, WZLX, another CBS station in Boston that features a format aimed at listeners that grew up loving the old WBCN format is doing very well.   Eulogies for 'BCN won't be about its format of recent years - they will be about the amazing station at 104.1FM starting in 1968 that was pregrammed by and for people  passionate about the music, and announcers like Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band, Mark Parenteau, Charles Laquaidara, and Carter Allen (now on WZLX). RIP (Rock In Peace), WBCN.

McCartney Does Free Big Apple Rush Hour Set
Before taping his David Letterman Show appearance yesterday
(7/15) in New York, Paul McCartney took to the top of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater to do a 5 song set.  The free show caused plenty of excitement for the thousands able to see it from the closed off street and surrounding buildings and made the usually hectic Mid-Town rush hour traffic a bigger nightmare for thousands more.  Paul did Coming Up, Band On The Run, Let me Roll It, Helter Skelter and Back In The USR during the 23 minute performance outside the building the Beatles first played during February, 1964 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show. Brother-In-Law Vamps on Ron Wood
Ron Wood
probably knew his alleged extra-marital affair with a Russian waitress young enough to be his grand daughter would cost him more than his wife's affection. The brother of Jo Wood has expressed his displeasure with his reportedly soon-to-be ex brother-in-law in his art work.  A vivid Paul Karslake  painting leaves little guess work about what the artist thinks of Wood.  The image portrays a man with an unmistakable resemblance to the Stones guitarist as a vampire drooling the blood of a just attacked blonde (the hair color of both Jo Wood and his purported mistress, Ekaterina Ivanova).  Get a good look hereWood stands to lose more than his relationship with Karslake, who over the years has collaborated with the band to produce numerous works of art celebrating the Stones. Henley Not on Social Networks, Warns Eagles Site
The proliferation of social networkers creating IDs that appear to belong to or to be authorized by musicians is a growing problem.  A few months ago a post purporting to be from David Bowie started a rumor, picked up on by several news sites, that he was in Berlin working on a new album. [story] Concern about similar dis-information has prompted the Eagles web site to post a notice advising fans that Don Henley does not Twitter, use Facebook or have a MySpace account - nor has he authorized anyone to manage one on his behalf.

Citi Field Hosts McCartney
Several decades but only a few hundred yards from the spot where his band made history in 1965, Paul McCartney took the stage at Citi Field last night (7/17).  The Beatles historic concert at Shea Stadium came the year after it was built.  McCartney broke in the new home of the Mets in its first season. There to help him do it on I Saw Her Standing There was Billy Joel, who McCartney joined on stage when the Piano Man did the last concert at Shea. Paul  covered all the bases last night during a 21/2 hour set that included  songs he played 44 years ago, ones from all phases of the Beatles, his years with Wings and his solo projects.  The Spartan staging and primitive sound of 1965 gave way to state of the art audio and video, including scenes from the Beatles Rock Band [story] during Got to get You Into My Life.

Hendrix Murder Plausible, According to MD
A claim in a book by a one-time roadie that Jimi Hendrix died as a result of foul play was given credence by a doctor who attempted to revive the guitarist, according to a report at Times Online.  The book, Rock Roadie by James Wright, contends that manager Michael Jeffrey hired men to pour wine and force sleeping pills down Jimi's throat.  The doctor, John Bannister, who had no idea who Hendrix was, called the quantities of wine inside of Hendrix even after substantial amounts had been vomited "massive".  Wright claims Jeffrey confessed the plot to him shortly before the manager died in a plane crash.  According to the book,  Jeffrey had taken out a substantial life insurance policy on Hendrix, and decided to have him taken out after the guitarist gave him reason to think he was planning to change managers.

Beatles Rock Band Comes Together
The whimsical mood of Beatle movies seems to guide the look and feel of The Beatles: Rock Band.  From black & white package art that evokes images of A Hard Day's Night to some game graphics that are reminiscent of Yellow Submarine, it is obvious that playing this console game will be fun.  But there will also be no shortage of remarkable realism built into it.  From the ability to contribute multi-part harmonies to being able to "perform" using game devices designed to replicate the instruments and equipment used at the time of the original recordings, and venue options that include Abbey Road Studio, Shea Stadium, the Cavern Club, the Ed Sullivan Theater, and the London rooftop where they did their last public performance together in 1969, this game has serious game.  The September 9 launch also comes with plenty of archived audio and photos, including many rarities sure to interest the serious fan.

New Riders of Purple Sage Founding Vocalist Dies
John "Marmaduke" Dawson, a founding member of the seminal Country Rock band the New Riders of the Purple Sage, lost his life to stomach cancer yesterday (7-21) in Mexico, where he had been living for the past several years. The New Riders grew out of a casual side gig Dawson and Jerry Garcia struck up in 1969 so the Grateful Dead guitarist could play more pedal steel guitar.  Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh also did stints in NRPS, and  Bill Kreutzmann and Donna Jean Godchaux appear on NRPS albums. The communal relationship of the bands had carried over to touring, with the Riders opening numerous Dead shows from the summer of '69-'73. Garcia made way for pedal steel specialist Buddy Cage after the first group's self-titled debut album, but played banjo in recording sessions after parting ways. Dawson left the band in the early 90's, retiring to the land of Panama RedDavid Nelson and Buddy Cage revived the band a few years ago with Dawson's blessing.

It's difficult (and probably pointless) to try and separate fact and fiction when it comes to Ozzy Osbourne. Even if Ozzy exposes some wild stories as myths in his auto biography, there are so many bizarre aspects to his life and career that the book will still be a highly entertaining read.   The book, I Am Ozzy, which has been a work in progress for a few years, is expected to be published October 9.  Ozzy previews it by saying, "It haunts me, all this crazy stuff... Van Halen Guitarist Under The Blade
Rolling Stone Magazine
reports that Eddie Van Halen recently had his hand operated on in Germany.  The surgery on the hot handed guitarist's left hand was due to pain that had increased to the point that Van Halen said he was not able to play, according to the story.  The operation took place in Düsseldorf, Germany after doctors there determined that the cause of the pain was a combination of a bone spur, a cyst in his thumb and a twisted tendon.  Eddie projects that his full recovery could take months, but says he's excited about his hand feeling as good as it did when he was 18.

Page, The Edge & Jack White Cut Loose
You gotta love It Might Get Loud as a name for a documentary about 3 electric guitar heros. It's as great an understatement as someone
about to wrench a dislocated shoulder back into place saying "this might hurt a bit".  In degree of potential pleasure and pain, the two are about equal.  Hopefully, you only need to take the word of someone on the shoulder.  But if you love great guitar playing, do not miss experiencing  It Might Get Loud for yourself.  Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White have less in common than differences - but their passion for guitar playing and the instruments themselves intersects in the same place - and previews suggest this documentary captures it wonderfully.  You don't have to be a musician to get off on the shop talk - and a film that lets you hear and see how each player's approach influences their sound is a great idea.  Just be sure to see it in a theater with awesome sound after it opens August 14. U2 Tour Provokes Hometown Protest
Dubliners take to streets over noise before and after concerts

[storyand video screen the band is using on the 360° Tour.  Their protests disrupted the load-out enough to cause a number of the trucks required to transport the staging to it's next assigned tour stop in Stockholm to miss a ferry.  Tour manager Jake Berry said the disruption, which involved fewer than 100 people, caused problems for the tour because it runs on a very tight schedule.

Jack Bruce Claims Death Threats Made

Tiger Plays "A" Game In Round With Bob Seger
