Chickenfoot Drummer Tears Bicep
Like hockey goalies and baseball

used to playing through injuries. But it is not always possible.
During a set in Paris on Monday night

Chad Smith tore the small bicep in one arm. The injury was severe
enough to force the group featuring Van Halen alums Sammy Hagar
and Michael Anthony together with Joe Satriani and the

Beatles Cover Hits The Spot For
Budweiser
The licensing of songs for commercials crosses a line for a lot of fans
- especially when it involves a song with decades of associations. The
fact Our Country by John Mellencamp was in a Chevy
truck commercial before it was even on an album made it less objectionable
than the same sponsor sucking the meaning out of Like A Rock
by Bob Seger. When Nike reportedly paid
$250,000 to use Revolution by the Beatles in a 1987
sneaker ad reaction was swift and very negative. But the decision to
license it belonged not to the surviving Beatles but to Michael
Jackson, who had bought the publishing rights to most of the
catalog four years earlier, and Capitol Records.
All Together Now has been around since 1969, and while there is
little chance the light hearted song from Yellow Submarine has
forged the deep connections other songs by the Beatles have with
fans, many will cringe at the idea of it being used to shill for beer.
But if you are willing to cut some slack for the artistic merit of how it is
used, the Budweiser ad shot from a Chicago Transit train with the song being
covered by the indie group The Hours just might earn a pass from you.

Another Aerosmith Set
Back
Late breaking word that the Aerosmith-ZZ Top concert scheduled for
tonite (7/1)
at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati is postponed comes as the
result of an apparent medical problem involving a band member.
Which band and the nature of the "artist injury" referenced in the release about
postponement remain unknown, but if it involves Aerosmith it adds to
the list of medical problems that have plagued the band in recent months.
Guitarist Joe Perry had to undergo leg surgery, causing cancellation
of a South American festival appearance and delaying the start of work on
the next album. [story].
Shortly after work had resumed, Steven Tyler contacted pneumonia. And
just days before the tour was set to kick-off, Brad Whitford

(7/4) in New

tenacity also contributed to frayed relationships with both groups.
Klein retained the rights to many Stones songs even after the
group had severed their management ties to him. His handling of
affairs for the Beatles after John Lennon convinced his
band mates to hire Klein following the death of Brian Epstein
also produced friction, despite his instrumental role in securing one of the
most lucrative deals ever for the band with the parent label of Apple

Klein was 77 at the time of his death, which was attributed to

Jacko And Elvis
It's no surprise that the death of Michael Jackson has taken on a
life of its own. The similarities in life and death between the King Of
Pop and The King make it clear that the career of Michael
Jackson will go on without him. The media feeding frenzy and
international fixation with MJ will both taper in the wake of his
memorial service and funeral, but there is no reason to think the meetings
and deals to cash in on the 'next phase' of Jackson's career have
been on hold out of respect. From odds makers taking bets on whether
the toxicology report indicates more or fewer drugs in his system than
Presley's did to people planning to make Neverland the next
Graceland, Michael is and will continue to be big business.
That both artists became bizarre enough to turn into caricatures of their
former selves does little to diminish their appeal to fans and and potential
to entrepreneurs. The sad thing is that in many ways, both were
destroyed by their own fame. Reaching a level of notoriety that makes
it impossible to live a 'normal' life is tough even for well grounded
people. Most who even approach the level of fame that Presley
and Jackson 'enjoyed' live significant portions of their their lives
in a bubble. No matter how spacious and lavish the bubble, living in
one takes a toll. The "price of fame", stressful to a well balanced
person, can cause the more vulnerable ones to completely unravel.
I never cared for Jackson's music, and the only Elvis era I
liked ended way before he put on a sequined jumpsuit. But their
deaths are just as tragic as those of the many musicians I admired whose
death certificates could have included "excess notoriety" or "victim of star
making machinery"* along with their "official" cause of death. It's a
list that includes Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison,
Jerry Garcia, Syd Barrett, Bon Scott, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Sid
Vicious, Kurt Cobain and dozens of others.

No Return Of Song
Rights No Big Deal To McCartney
Speculation in a British tabloid
that the Michael Jackson will
would return the remaining rights to Beatles songs he owns to Paul
McCartney has been debunked - and the former Beatle says he never

rumor are apparently now claiming that McCartney was "devastated" to

The brief statement closes with, "At times like this, the press do tend to

Jackson bought the rights to much of the Beatles song catalog

of US dates with a concert in Hartford, Connecticut on the 19th. Other
additions to the schedule include several cities the tour did not hit before
heading overseas, and return engagements in a number of places it did.
The latter category includes two more shows at the Spectrum in
Philadelphia. The scene of dozens of legendary Springsteen shows and
one of Bruce's favorite venues and cities to play, the Spectrum joins
Giants Stadium as another close to home venue slated for demolition
later in the year.

WBCN Siging Off In
Boston
Boston's once loud and proud Rock station had been running on
fumes since abandoning the bands and listeners that made it great in the
interest of attracting a younger audience. 'BCN still rocked
after the shift to 'Alternative', but none of the 'next big bands' turned out
to have any staying power - and neither did the younger audience, which
increasingly considers radio as obsolete as the typewriter. CBS
announced this week that WBCN will stop Rocking on the FM dial on
August 13 to make room for yeat another sports-talk format. It will
continue streaming online at wbcn.com. Ironically, WZLX,
another CBS station in Boston that features a format aimed at
listeners that grew up loving the old WBCN format is doing very well.
Eulogies for 'BCN won't be about its format of recent years - they will be
about the amazing station at 104.1FM starting in 1968 that was pregrammed by
and for people passionate about the music, and announcers like
Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band, Mark Parenteau,
Charles Laquaidara, and Carter Allen (now on WZLX). RIP
(Rock In Peace), WBCN.

McCartney Does Free Big
Apple Rush Hour Set
Before taping his David Letterman Show appearance yesterday
(7/15) in New York, Paul McCartney
took to the top of the marquee of the Ed Sullivan Theater to do a 5
song set. The free show caused plenty of excitement for the thousands
able to see it from the closed off street and surrounding buildings and made
the usually hectic Mid-Town rush hour traffic a bigger nightmare for
thousands more. Paul did Coming Up, Band On The Run, Let
me Roll It, Helter Skelter and Back In The USR during
the 23 minute performance outside the building the Beatles first
played during February, 1964 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Brother-In-Law Vamps on
Ron Wood
Ron Wood probably knew his alleged extra-marital affair with a Russian
waitress young enough to be his grand daughter would cost him more than his
wife's affection. The brother of Jo Wood has expressed his
displeasure with his reportedly soon-to-be ex brother-in-law in his art work. A vivid Paul Karslake painting leaves little
guess work about
what the artist thinks of Wood. The image portrays a man with an
unmistakable resemblance to the Stones guitarist as a vampire
drooling the blood of a just
attacked blonde (the hair color of both Jo Wood

Hendrix Murder
Plausible, According to MD
A claim in a book by a one-time roadie that Jimi Hendrix died as
a result of foul play was given credence by a doctor who attempted to revive
the guitarist, according to a report at Times Online. The book,
Rock Roadie by James Wright, contends that manager
Michael Jeffrey hired men to pour wine and force sleeping pills down
Jimi's throat. The doctor, John Bannister, who had no idea
who Hendrix was, called the quantities of wine inside of Hendrix
even after substantial amounts had been vomited "massive". Wright
claims Jeffrey confessed the plot to him shortly before the manager
died in a plane crash. According to the book, Jeffrey had taken
out a substantial life insurance policy on Hendrix, and decided to have him
taken out after the guitarist gave him reason to think he was planning to
change managers.

Beatles Rock Band Comes
Together
The whimsical mood of Beatle movies seems to guide the look and
feel of The Beatles: Rock Band. From black & white package art
that evokes images of A Hard Day's Night to some game graphics that
are reminiscent of Yellow Submarine, it is obvious that playing this
console game will be fun. But there will also be no shortage of
remarkable realism built into it. From the ability to contribute
multi-part harmonies to being able to "perform" using game devices designed
to replicate the instruments and equipment used at the time of the original
recordings, and venue options that include Abbey Road Studio, Shea
Stadium, the Cavern Club, the Ed Sullivan Theater, and the
London rooftop where they did their last public performance together in
1969, this game has serious game. The September 9 launch also comes
with plenty of archived audio and photos, including many rarities sure to

New Riders of Purple Sage
Founding Vocalist Dies
John "Marmaduke"
Dawson, a founding member of the seminal Country Rock band the New
Riders of the Purple Sage, lost his life to stomach cancer yesterday
(7-21)
in Mexico, where he had been living for the past several years. The New
Riders grew out of a casual side gig Dawson and Jerry Garcia
struck up in 1969 so the Grateful Dead guitarist could play more
pedal steel guitar. Mickey Hart and Phil Lesh also did
stints in NRPS, and Bill Kreutzmann and Donna Jean
Godchaux appear on NRPS albums. The communal relationship
of the bands had carried over to touring, with the Riders opening
numerous Dead shows from the summer of '69-'73.
Garcia made way for pedal steel specialist Buddy Cage after the
first group's self-titled debut album, but played banjo
in recording sessions after parting ways.
Dawson left the band in the early 90's, retiring to the
land of Panama Red. David Nelson and Buddy Cage revived the band a few years ago with Dawson's
blessing.

Van Halen Guitarist
Under The Blade
Rolling Stone Magazine reports that Eddie Van Halen recently had
his hand operated on in Germany. The surgery on the hot handed
guitarist's left hand was due to pain that had increased to the point that
Van Halen said he was not able to play, according to the story.
The operation took place in Düsseldorf, Germany after doctors there
determined that the cause of the pain was a combination of a bone spur, a
cyst in his thumb and a twisted tendon. Eddie projects that his
full recovery could take months, but says he's excited about his hand
feeling as good as it did when he was 18.

Page, The Edge & Jack
White Cut Loose
You gotta love It Might Get Loud as
a name for a documentary about 3 electric guitar heros. It's as great an
understatement as someone
about to wrench a dislocated
shoulder back into place saying "this might hurt a bit". In degree
of potential pleasure and pain, the two are about equal. Hopefully, you only need to
take the word of someone on the shoulder. But if you love great guitar
playing, do not miss experiencing It Might Get Loud for
yourself. Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White have less
in common than differences - but their passion for guitar playing and the
instruments themselves intersects in the same place - and previews suggest
this documentary
captures it wonderfully. You don't have to be a musician to get off on
the shop talk - and a film that lets you hear and see how each player's
approach influences their sound is a great idea. Just be sure to see it in a theater
with awesome sound after it opens August 14.

U2 Tour Provokes
Hometown Protest
Dubliners take to streets over noise before and after concerts
Open air concerts always generate complaints about the decibel
levels generated by massive sound systems. That's not what got dozens
of residents in neighborhoods surrounding the stadium U2 played in
Dublin irate enough to take to the streets. Their outrage was over the
time it took and the amount of noise associated with assembling and
dismantling the massive stage [story]

Their protests disrupted the load-out enough to cause a number of the trucks

disruption, which involved fewer than 100 people, caused problems for the
tour because it runs on a very tight schedule.
